Bob Halbruner is the director of individual advancement and is responsible for Major Gifts & Discovery, Gift Planning, Friends of the Smithsonian, the James Smithson Society and the Smithsonian Women’s Committee. He joined the Smithsonian in 2019.
Most recently, he served as the assistant vice president for development at the University of Virginia and vice president for development at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond. Previous to arriving in Virginia, Halbruner was vice president of marketing and communications at the Arts & Science Council in Charlotte, North Carolina, one of the country’s largest united arts funds and local arts agencies.
Halbruner has presented on a variety of arts and cultural participation topics at national conventions, including the National Music Teachers Association, the League of American Orchestras and the American Association of State and Local History.
A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University and the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts, he holds a bachelor and a master’s degree in piano performance.
